History
In 1933, construction began on the Golden Gate Bridge, the first singing telegram was sung, the movie "King Kong" premiered in New York – and Prohibition was repealed.
This last event triggered the opening of alcohol sales and alcohol distribution. Two young men, Sidney Eder and Meyer Cohen, seeing the economic opportunity, founded Eder Brothers, Inc.
At the time, Sidney Eder was working for his father-in-law at a high end grocery store in Greenwich, CT. Knowing a bit about how products reached a grocer’s shelves, he decided that wholesale alcohol distribution was a good choice of business to be in. With the aid of Meyer Cohen, they started Cohen Bros Distributors.
Cohen Bros. Distributors started out of the basement of the grocery store where Sidney Eder worked, and which Meyer Cohen owned. They landed the Hiram Walker Franchise in Connecticut, and when the company started to take off, they moved to a bigger location on Railroad Avenue in Greenwich.
In the 1940’s, Sidney bought the company from Meyer Cohen, and his brother Arthur joined after returning from the war. It was then that Cohen Bros. became Eder Bros., Inc. The two brothers opened a second location on Chapel Street in New Haven to better serve their customers, and moved to a bigger location in West Haven on Wood Street soon after.
Now in its third generation with the Eder Family, and located at 11 Eder Road in West Haven, we are still recognized as a leading distributor in Connecticut.
Our approach – sell high quality products backed by superior customer service – has been maintained since our inception in 1933. We also have remained committed to highly trained sales consultants, state of the art technology, effective warehouse and delivery, and a strong internal office support system. There are currently more than 100 employees, some of whom are second and even third generation personnel for the company. Today, we continue to grow our supplier base as well as the brands we offer.
